Douglas Yeo with Dr. Peter Iltis

COMING in 2026
Trombone Science will be launched in 2026. This site will feature real-time MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) videos of Douglas Yeo playing on a specially made trombone manufactured and donated to the MRI project by YAMAHA Corporation, Japan, and commentary by Douglas Yeo and Dr. Peter Iltis. These videos were recorded in 2017 and 2025 at the Max Planck Institute, Göttingen, Germany, as part of the MRI Brass Repository Project. Viewers will see the actual real-time workings of the mouth and tongue (oral cavity/oropharynx), the throat, trachea, and glottis, and the chest and lungs (thoracic cavity) during trombone playing. Trombone Science will show and discuss how human body works during trombone playing throughout the breathing process and when a player produces articulations, slurs, notes in various registers, and more. Trombone Science will also include links to scientific articles based on the work of the MRI Brass Repository Project, and it will provide unique insights for both performers and teachers.
